A NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Hello All,

I hope everyone had a great winter. It looks like spring may be here to stay soon.

With the coming of spring, also comes road weight restrictions. All township roads are currently under a 5 ton per axle weight restriction. Due to this restriction, there won't be much road maintenance being done, until the frost is out.

Also, please keep an eye out on the DNR website for any burning restrictions they may put in place. This can be found at: Fire danger and burning restrictions | Minnesota DNR

2026 SPRING ROAD RESTRICTIONS

Chisago County and Shafer Township follow MnDOT guidance for implementing and lifting road restrictions. As of March 3, 2026, spring weight restrictions are in effect, limiting township roads to 5 tons per axle unless otherwise posted, and similar restrictions apply to county roads based on MnDOT Metro and Central area guidance. These restrictions are designed to prevent damage to asphalt streets as the frost leaves the ground and the underlying gravel is saturated with moisture.

Travelers and commercial vehicle operators should adhere to weight limits to avoid fines and prevent road damage, and check official county or MnDOT websites for the latest updates before planning routes.

MONTHLY MEETING NOTICE

The April 2026 monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, April 9th at 7:00 pm at the Shafer Town Hall.

If you would like to address the Township Board during a monthly meeting, please contact us at least 3 days prior to the meeting date to be added to the Meeting Agenda.

If not added to the Agenda, public comment time is limited to 3 minutes per person.

2026 LOCAL BOARD OF APPEAL AND EQUALIZATION MEETING

The 2026 Local Board of Appeal and Equalization for Shafer Township will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 at 6:00 pm at the Shafer Township Hall.

2026 SHAFER TOWNSHIP ELECTION RESULTS

Shafer Township Elections were held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

The residents of Shafer elected the following:

Supervisor Laurie Blank (35 votes)

Clerk Faith Lichtscheidl (33 votes)

About Shafer township

Shafer Township is located in southeast Chisago County, bordered to the east by the city of Taylors Falls and the St. Croix River, which is the Minnesota–Wisconsin border. The city of Shafer is in the southwest part of the township but an administratively separate entity. The unincorporated community of Palmdale is in the north.

U.S. Highway 8 follows most of the southern boundary of the township, turning northeast to travel to Taylors Falls, then across the river to St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, and leading west to Lindstrom and Chisago City. State Highway 95 (MN 95) crosses the north part of the township, passing through Palmdale and leading southeast to Taylors Falls and northwest to North Branch.
