Welcome to Shafer Township. Working together for a Better Future

Welcome to

SHAFER
TOWNSHIP

Working together for a
Better Future

A NOTE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN:

Hello Everyone,

Winter is in full swing! We have gotten a lot of snow so far this season, and I hope everyone who enjoys snowmobiling and skiing is taking full advantage of the weather.  However, the lake and river ice is not optimal. Please be aware and extra careful when going out on to the ice this winter.

PERMIT UPDATES:

Several updates have been made to our driveway access permitting process. All new driveways or any modification to an existing driveway (where it meets the road right of way), have always required a permit.

We have also adopted a new garbage and recycle can policy; as well as a mailbox policy. These can be viewed on our website in the 'Township Policies & Permits' tab.  We are currently working on updates to the snow plowing policy and hope to have it ready soon.

I again want to remind everyone that plowing snow from your driveway across a road is illegal and a misdemeanor by MN State Statute 160.2715(a)(1).  This statute may be viewed at: https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/2021/cite/160.2715

When plowing your snow across the road, ridges are left in the roadway creating a hazard for traffic. Also, piling your snow on the shoulder creates an extreme hazard for the snowplow. The piles freeze and become hard.  When the plow hits the frozen piled snow, it can cause significant damage to the plow and the truck. The plow may also catch the frozen pile of snow and spin the truck into the ditch, causing significant damage to the truck and potentially injuring the driver.

Please be aware of this law and courteous when plowing your driveway.

As you enjoy your favorite Minnesota winter sports of ice fishing, snowmobiling, skiing (or just enjoying the snow), please stay warm and safe.

Mark Stovern
Shafer Township Chairman
